The BS in biology offers preparation for graduate school and a sound basis for professional training in biological and health sciences. Biology is a broad field, and students can tailor their programs to fit personal interests or career aspirations. The two subplans: genetics, cell and development, & ecology, evolution and behavior, are the two major emphases in the study and practice of biology and choice of upper division electives gives students the flexibility to further focus their degree programs. The Department of Biology encourages students to develop as active scholars and to participate in undergraduate research. The degree involves faculty from multiple departments in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and the UM Medical School. The Parker lab focuses on assay development for post-translational modifications, with an emphasis on protein phosphorylation by tyrosine kinases. Our team uses chemical biology and proteomics to develop tests to quickly screen for better inhibitor drugs, and/or determine effectiveness of inhibitors to improve patient outcomes during cancer treatment. We are an interdisciplinary group equipped in-house for peptide synthesis, analysis and purification, HPLC-MS and proteomics, fluorescence spectroscopy, Western blotting, mammalian cell culture, protein expression, and many other techniques. Lab members get trained in all of these techniques and have the opportunity to take their projects in a wide range of directions related to our central research themes of peptide biosensors and read-out technology development.
