The UK's favourite supermarket with 'delicious' grub has been revealed (2024)

The votes are in and the nation has spoken – Aldi is the UK’s favourite supermarket, according to a new poll.

It has held the title since July 2023, beating out the likes of Asda with its amazing gluten-free offerings, and Lidl which adopted the middle aisle bargain craze.

This isn’t to say the German supermarket hasn’t been given a run for its money.

The Good Housekeeping Institute has announced the winners of theirFood Awardsfor 2024, naming as the best supermarket, in terms of value and quality.

While it may be a bit pricier compared to Aldi, was cherished by shoppers for its premium store cupboard essentials, ‘innovative’ new launches and generally ‘delicious’ products.

But it seems that Brits have developed a taste for an inexpensive weekly shop, opting for Aldi above all else. This is according to YouGov data for April, May and June.

It’s no surprise either, since the supermarket giant has been named the UK’s cheapest supermarket by Which? three years in a row.

The popular chain was a huge £32.60 cheaper than the most expensivesupermarket, Waitrose, for an equivalent list of shopping items.

Aldi’s Specialbuys are a firm favourite for shoppers with sections for plants and flowers, back to school necessities and kitchen supplies – let’s not forget the beloved air fryer offering.

This concept is so popular with shoppers that a new supermarket chain has launched a range, set to rival Aldi’sSpecialbuysand the Middle of Lidl.

MorrisonsWhen It’s Gone It’s Gone, will offer lower prices on any similar items in the market, ideally with a staggering 50% or above saving for customers.

Shoppers can expect to find an extensive range of discounted items, including cookware (including branded items such as Kitchen Aid, Green Pan, Mauviel), toys (including licensed such as Barbie, Peppa Pig, Bluey), homeware and electricals, household, food and drink, health and beauty, outdoor and garden, car care and travel.

Of course, at Aldi the savings don’t stop there, with the German Supermarket offering Super Six.

Every fortnight, the supermarket selects six items which are sold at super low prices and if you plan your dinners around these fruits and veggies, you’re sure to save some pennies.

This week it’s just 29p for a grapefruit, 39p for spring onions, 69p for tomatoes and 99p for cherries. There’s discounted Easy Peelers and radishes too.

Did we mention that shoppers rave on the Aldi UK Shoppers Facebook page about the ‘delicious’ food and ‘great bargains’?

The supermarket is great when it comes to catering for special occasions too. Metro’s Jess Austin reviewed Aldi’s Valentine’s Meal Deal which cost just £3.38 per person without wine, or £5.43 with a bottle.

She said: ‘The garlic bread was crusty on the outside and doughy on the inside, just like I like it. I enjoyed the cheesy topic and splitting in half (although are broken hearts romantic?) was a good portion size for a starter or side dish. Did it blow my socks off? No, but I didn’t expect it to – it’s garlic bread.

‘The lobster tortellini I was excited for. Not knowing what to expect flavour wise, I topped with butter but I reckon you could have it with a pesto and some peas and broccoli. There was enough filling inside so that I didn’t feel cheated, and the lobster paste was a great consistency and not too fishy.’

It sounds like a solid meal to us, and definitely worth the dosh.

The supermarket is also keen on doing it’s bit for the environment, with eco-friendly changes being made to its products.

The brand has replaced its plastic and cardboard packaging on its Dentitex Soft and Whitening toothbrushes to a 100% cardboard packaging. And it began totrial double-sized toilet rollsto cut the amount of plastic waste and the number of lorries needed to deliver stock.

It alsogot rid of all single-use cutleryin its Food to Go range and switched to vacuum-packed mince meat and colourless milk caps to further reduce its environmental impact.

The supermarket has even moved to apackaging-free modelfor certain products, with refill stations rolled out across a small number of stores following a successful trial in Solihull.

Saving money and the planet? We see why it’s the nation’s favourite.
